Has NASA discovered extraterrestrial life?

Has NASA discovered extraterrestrial life?

Here's a curious press release from NASA:

NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.

I did a little research on the news conference participants and found:

1. Pamela Conrad (a geobiologist) was the primary author of a 2009 paper on geology and life on Mars

2. Felisa Wolfe-Simon (an oceanographer) has written extensively on photosynthesis using arsenic recently (she worked on the team mentioned in this article)

3. Steven Benner (a biologist) is on the "Titan Team" at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; they're looking at Titan (Saturn's largest moon) as an early-Earth-like chemical environment. This is likely related to the Cassini mission.

4. James Elser (an ecologist) is involved with a NASA-funded astrobiology program called Follow the Elements, which emphasizes looking at the chemistry of environments where life evolves (and not just looking at water or carbon or oxygen).

So, if I had to guess at what NASA is going to reveal on Thursday, I'd say that they've discovered arsenic on Titan and maybe even detected chemical evidence of bacteria utilizing it for photosynthesis (by following the elements). Or something like that.

Light Skin Therapy

I'm starting to plan out which gifts to get this Black Friday and I was trying to find out something for my mother. I know she really wants a new skin care product since she loves taking care of her skin. Anyways, I was researching and I came upon this idea of light acne and skin light therapy. The idea behind this treatment is based on specific light waves, blue or red, that concentrate on killing bacteria and encouraging skin cells to regenerate. It used to only be available at spa's or professional skin care facilities, but now you can purchase them for home personal use!

Here's a great article on acne light treatment. I also found this site called, Light Acne, that has even more information as well as pretty good reviews on some products out there.

Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

Theres a new movie out from the director of Iron Man, John Favreau, called "Cowboys & Aliens". It stars Daniel Craig (James Bond), Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde (House), and Sam Rockwell.

I'm curious how they are going to approach this movie and whether or not its going to be a serious type of movie or one for the whole family. The release date indicates its blockbuster status. I guess we can start judging once they release the trailer in a couple of days.

Pet automatic feeders and water fountains

I leave my two dogs at home when I go to work. I usually get a chance to go home for lunch so that I can walk them and let them relieve themselves. Sometimes when I'm too busy or something comes up I end up having to feed them when I get home later in the day, which makes me feel so bad.

Anyways, I started looking into pet automatic feeders and I found out there are plenty of styles and sizes available. This would make a perfect gift for my little buddies this Christmas!

Amazon has many to choose from too!

Running Shoes 101

So I started getting into running outside again and I found some pretty good trails in my area. I went to the Road Runner Sports, which tailors to everything about sport running. I never realized how important choosing the right running shoe was. Its really dependent on your arch type as well as the way you run. I found a good website called, "Road Runner Shoes", which has a very nice guide for running as well as reviews and information about running in general. Check it out!

Rocket Racing League

I was watching the Science Channel earlier today and they had a show about the up and coming Rocket Racing League. It sounds like an exciting sport and they're trying to make it the NASCAR version of flying.

The interesting part of the show caught me off guard because of who was involved in the development of the engines. A company called, Armadillo Aerospace, which develops reusable rocket powered vehicles, is developing the rocket engines for these planes. The crazy thing is John Carmack was featured as the lead engineer on the project as well as a member of Armadillo Aerospace.

For those of you who don't know who John Carmack is, he was the lead programmer at id computer games, famous for games like Wolfentstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. He is best known for his innovations in 3D graphics.

Anyways, I thought that was a very intersting connection there. Speaking of 3D graphics and games, who's getting the new Call of Duty Black Ops? I know I am!
